A living will is a health care advance directive that declares a person’s desires for medical care in the event of terminal illness or in the event that one cannot make such decisions for him or herself, such as permanent unconsciousness. It is a “living” will because it goes into effect during your lifetime, and not at death. Although a living will is commonly used when a person is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, it is also used as part of the estate planning process so that people who may be making medical decisions for you in the future are aware of your desires if you are unable to express them later.
